Shoe Revolt and Auction Cause Launch Celebrity Shoe Auction on April 5

Shoe Revolt and Auction Cause have joined forces to utilize the power of celebrity influence and social media to raise much-needed funds for programs designed to rescue and restore victims.

Ateba Crocker founded the Shoe Revolt a registered 501(C)(3) charitable organization in an effort to help stomp out the plague of sexual slavery in the United States.

In the United States alone, commercial sex trafficking is a billion dollar industry, and it continues to thrive. The statistics are staggering; the average age of entry into prostitution for boys is 11-13 years old, and for girls is 12-14. The girls and boys that are rescued from domestic trafficking require intensive therapy, medical care, education and job skills, nutritious food and trauma counseling.

The full rehabilitation of the sex slave victims can be a costly, long-term process, often involving years of healing and training. Resources available are outstripped by demand and rescued children can find themselves with nowhere to go but back on the street, thus heaping heartache on top of tragedy. The care is extremely costly, and often victims need to stay in shelters for years until they are healed and able to live productive lives once again. There are not nearly enough programs to house the thousands of victims of human trafficking, and these children have nowhere to go once rescued, which simply re-starts this vicious cycle.

Ateba Crocker refused to allow the cycle to continue any longer without stepping in. She suffered abuse from her father at a young age, and turned to prostitution to support her first son. Crocker started Shoe Revolt to take a stand against commercial sex trafficking.

Crocker’s own story of redemption fueled her fire to start Shoe Revolt, but she can’t do it alone. Help came in the form of Auction Cause. Eric Gazin founder of Auction Cause states, “When I first spoke with Ateba and heard her passion for trying to end sex abuse suffering through Shoe Revolt, I knew this was a cause we wanted to support. There are so many hot spots around the world for the sex trade. We do not often even realize there are victims right here in the United States until it is pointed out to us by organizations like Shoe Revolt.”

Shoe Revolt teams up with celebrities who donate their shoes to Shoe Revolt, which are then sent to Auction Cause to be auctioned-off online. Auction Cause was founded on the idea of using our marketing, design and eBay skills to link fans with incredible causes, all the while educating and fundraising. Auction Cause helps nonprofits like Shoe Revolt raise income. All profits from the shoes auctioned on April 5th will go toward supporting Shoe Revolt’s mission. Shoe Revolt will auction off shoes from celebs like Glee Star Lea Michele, Modern Family star Nolan Gould and many more.

Facebook: It Is NOT Funny! by Amy Unruh

Facebook: It Is NOT Funny!

I was horrified the other day when I read an article from The Huffington Post
February 8 detailing how Facebook has refused to remove all pages from its site that
condone sexual violence against women after petitioners through change.org
complained.  Facebook is defending these pages, stating that they are just like a
joke that friends may tell over a few beers, and that what one person may find
offensive, another may find entertaining.  It appears that if it is labeled as Humor
or Satire, anything goes.  I had no idea such content was being allowed.  Doesn't it
violate their terms of use.  That's what this article was suggesting, and I have to
agree.
So, what are these pages that many find entertaining?  Here are a few that remain up
and running on Facebook.  Please be aware that these may be triggering for survivors
of sexual violence:
"How dare you call me a rapist!!! Jk, Get in the Van" remains active and has more
than 282,893 "likes."  This site had more than 10,000 likes in its first four hours
and appears to be growing quickly, with nearly 21,000 Likes earned since Feb 8,
2012.
“If I wanted you to open your mouth, I would have dropped my pants” remains active
and has 3213 Likes.  Though it is not labeled as humor, it has not been pulled.
“Throwing eggs at sluts, brick shaped eggs -- made from brick" remains active and
has 49,831 Likes.  This site encourages users to rate other users photos with a
"drown" or "hit....... With a shovel."  It contains a photo of a woman jogging, her
cleavage quite explicitly bared.
"Wiping makeup off your shoe after a long day of kicking sluts in the face" has
91,941 Likes.  Current posts in this forum reveal that people are quite shocked over
the complaints made about this page.
A set of 8 pages that start with “You know she’s playing hard to get when…” also
remain quite active, with Likes ranging from 51 for a school sports team that
started the page, “You know she’s playing hard to get when weapons come into it” to
965 for the government official’s page entitled “You know she’s playing hard to get
when she trys [sic] to break out of your van.”
Several people fighting against Facebook on this matter don’t believe that labeling
these as Humor or Satire pages is a laughing matter.  Shelby Knox, change.org’s
direction of organizing for women’s rights stated in the above mentioned article:
"Alleging humor does not give a free pass to promoting hate content.  If the point
of Facebook is to create an open community for everyone to express themselves, there
has to be some give and take between what is a horrible attempt at humor and making
a space unsafe for those who have been the victims of sexual violence."

Indeed. Joking about this kind of violence is just as horrible as committing the
crime in my eyes.  An atmosphere of hate speech is promoted that makes light of the
trauma endured by a victim, thus re-traumatizing the survivors of these vicious
crimes.  I am one of those survivors.  I felt like a victim all over again, like
people were saying nothing was wrong with the rapes I endured.  In fact, they were
laughing, saying that the horrors I endured are a funny joke.   I was overcome with
anxiety and rage.  The message received is that violence against women is
acceptable.  Facebook's refusal to remove these pages has prompted me to take
action.   Though I am not advocating readers to deactivate their Facebook accounts,
I have.  I can no longer support a networking site that can condone such atrocious
criminal acts.

If you are a Facebook user, I implore you to light up Facebook with this atrocity.
Share this with your friends and encourage them to pass it along.  Let’s make
Facebook a forum where the promotion of sexual violence against women will not be to
tolerated.  Please spread the awareness anywhere you can, via any social media
avenue, and support John Raines at change.org and the nearly 200,000 people who have
signed his petition calling for Facebook to take action:
http://www.change.org/petitions/demand-facebook-remove-pages-that-promote-sexual-violence.
Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Glee Superstar Lea Michele Donates to Shoe Revolt - Auction is LIVE

Lea Michele donated a pair of (size seven) Kimchi Blue red flats from her personal closet to Shoe Revolt, an Oregon nonprofit that fights commercial sex trafficking through shoes. The pair is going to be available in an auction for you to bid on!

Lea Michele Sarfati was born in the Bronx, New York and raised in Tenafly, New Jersey. Lea got her start on Broadway in the production of Les Miserables. At eight years old, she went with a friend to an audition, decided to try out, and was offered the role. Lea appeared in several Broadway shows until she was in her early twenties. She was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for her performance in Spring Awakening, for Outstanding Actress in a Musical. Michele starred in the show for two years before exploring more career opportunities. In 2009, Lea landed the role of “Rachel Berry” on the FOX hit Glee. For her performance on the show, Lea received the 2009 Satellite Award for Best Actress in a Series, Comedy or Musical. She also wan a Screen Actors Guild Award for Glee. Lea has also received Golden Globe, Emmy, and Teen Choice Award nominations.

Shoe Revolt takes donations of shoes and sells them on their online boutique to raise funds for programs that support survivors of commercial sex trafficking. The executive director of one of those programs, Vashti’s Voice, explains what having Shoe Revolt’s support means, “I am excited and grateful that Shoe Revolt is raising funds for our program. I think people need to be aware that this crime is happening in every neighborhood, not just those in less affluent areas. People tend to feel disconnected and unmoved because they do not acknowledge the presence of this crime in their own domains” To learn about Vashti’s Voice, and other programs Shoe Revolt supports, visit http://www.shoerevolt.com/programs

The involvement of celebrities in Shoe Revolt’s program has greatly improved the organization’s ability to contribute to fighting sex trafficking in the United States. It also brings much more awareness to the issue in one of the most troubled states, California, as most celebrities reside here.
